Baseball and Softball Divisions and Special Rules

Baseball Divisions

SLUGGERS | AGES: 4-5

This is our youngest division. Teaches the basic fundamentals of baseball including hitting, fielding, throwing and base running. A soft baseball is used for safety and all players hit from a tee. Every player will bat once each inning (continuous lineup). An inning is over when everyone has taken a turn a bat.

*Players must be 4 years old (as of August 31) to participate in the Slugger Division.
*For players who are league age 5, and this is their FIRST year playing, we recommend the Slugger Division.

MINOR T | AGES: 5-6

Teaches the basic fundamentals of baseball including hitting, fielding, throwing and base running. The primary goal is teaching the fundamentals of the game help to introduce the children to the excitement of the game and experience the value of teamwork. A soft baseball is used for safety and players hit from both a machine and a tee to help put the ball in play and speed up the game. Sportsmanship and fair play are stressed to both players and coaches. Players are assigned to teams in a random order with consideration being given to siblings. Defensive play includes 4 infielders, pitcher, catcher and 4-5 outfielders. The goal is to keep as many of the children involved with the game at all times. The batting order is continuous and a maximum runs of 5 per inning is enforced. No score or team statistics are kept. There are no league standings or playoffs. Games are limited to 4 innings or 1.5 hours, which ever come first.

*For players who are league age 5, and this is their FIRST year playing, we recommend the Slugger Division.

MINOR B | AGES: 7-8

Similar to Minor T, Minor B continues to teach the fundamentals of the game while introducing the children to live pitching and some fundamental strategies of the game. When live pitching is not in play, the use of a machine is utilized and no tees are used. Umpiring is done by coaches located behind the pitcher's mound. Score is kept and every team makes the post-season playoff, culminating in a division champion. Defensive play includes 4 infielders, pitcher, catcher and 3 outfielders. Equal playing time is stressed and expected. Games are scheduled for 5 innings and usually last no longer than 2 hours. Players that are 8 years old are eligible to be voted onto an All-Star team.

MINOR A | AGES: 9-11

In Minor A, players are exposed to their first level of competition, however development remains priority one for the player. This is the first division that utilizes Canal's Junior Umpire Program. Scores and standings are kept and every team makes the post-season playoff, culminating in a division champion. Players are assigned to their teams through a draft method following a try-out. Live pitching is full time, there is no use of machine in Minor A. Batting order remains continuous and a maximum number of 4 runs per inning, except for the final inning, are enforced. Traditional defensive alignment is utilized. Players that are 9 years old are eligible to be voted onto an All-Star team.

MAJORS | AGES: 10-12

This is our premier baseball division where the development of the lower divisions climax into a competitive environment. Managers and coaches are reinforcing the emphasis of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play with the goal of winning games. Standings are kept in this division and all teams will participate in a post-season playoff, culminating in a division champion. Teams are filled by a draft method following a try-out and if a player, age 10 or 11 is not drafted by a Major's team, they will be placed on a Minor A team. All 12 year old players will be assigned to a majors team if new to the division. There are 4 All Star teams that players are eligible to be voted onto. A 10 year old district team that could potentially advance to state and regional tournaments, as well as a 12 year old district team that could potentially advance to state, regional, and national tournaments. This division also sends and 11 year old and a second 12 year old All Star team to the Brandywine Invitational, which is a local tournament.

JUNIORS | AGES: 13-14

SENIORS | AGES: 15-16

Softball Divisions

MINOR B | AGES: 6-8

Teaches the basic fundamentals of softball including hitting, fielding, throwing and base running. The primary goal of teaching the fundamentals of the game help to introduce the children to the excitement of the game and experience the value of teamwork. Sportsmanship and fair play are stressed to both players and coaches. Players are assigned to teams in a random order. Consideration is given to siblings. Division will include coach pitching. Player pitching is limited on the number of pitches depending on age group. Coach pitch will included five balls thrown to the batter. No tees are used. Defensive play includes 4 infielders, pitcher, catcher and 3-5 outfielders. The goal is teach the intricacies of each position. The batting order is a continuous lineup and a maximum runs of 5 per inning is enforced. No score or team statistics are kept. There are no league standings or playoffs. Games are limited to 5 innings or 2 hours, which ever come first.

*Girls who are league age 6 may register for Minor B Softball if they have played a year of Tee Ball/Sluggers.
*Girls who are league age 8 are encouraged to try out for Minor A, unless this is their first time playing.

MINOR A | AGES: 8-10

Similar to Minor B, the Minor A division continues to teach the basic fundamentals of softball including hitting, fielding, throwing and base running. Teams are filled by a draft method following a try-out and if a player is not drafted by a Minor A team, they will be placed at random on a Minor B team. Players that are 9 and 10 years old are eligible to be voted onto the Minor A All-Star team.

MAJORS | AGES: 9-12

This is our premier softball division where girls are introduced to competition. Managers and coaches are reinforcing the emphasis of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play with the goal of winning games. Standings are kept in this division and all teams will participate in a post-season playoff, culminating in a division champion. Teams are filled by a draft method following a try-out and if a player is not drafted by a Major's team, they will be placed on a Minor A team. There is also a District 2 All Star team that players are eligible to be voted onto at the end of the season, which could lead to state, regional, and national tournaments.

SENIORS | AGES: 13-16
